Agents went from 12% to 66% task success in a year — but only 6% of companies capture the value
Source Packaging Technology Today (citing Stanford 2026 AI Index)
Why it matters for entrepreneurs: On real computer work — opening files, navigating apps, finishing multi-step workflows — agent success climbed from 12% to 66% in a single year, within six points of human performance. But McKinsey finds only 6% of organizations attribute real bottom-line impact to AI, and 81% report no meaningful impact at all. The model is no longer the constraint. Deployment is.
The gap is sharpest for small and mid-sized businesses. Goldman Sachs data cited in the report shows 76% of small businesses now use AI, but only 14% have woven it into daily operations. The reason is structural: SMBs rarely have dedicated IT, security, or compliance staff, so the same person owns the workflow, the data, and the risk. Stanford also logged 362 AI incidents in 2025, up 55% year over year — much of it from ungoverned, bolt-on tool use. The takeaway for a service operator: capability is now commodity, but a governed way to actually run agents inside a small business is not.

Google's Gemini 3.5 Pro is due this month as the coding-model race tightens
Source CNBC
Gemini 3.5 Flash shipped GA at I/O on May 19, and Sundar Pichai has said the Pro version lands "next month." Meanwhile Microsoft and Google are pushing their own coding models to challenge Anthropic and OpenAI, which means cheaper, faster frontier capability and more leverage at the negotiating table for anyone who builds on these APIs.
Enterprise vendors are racing to ship turnkey agent platforms
Source Crescendo AI news roundup
AWS expanded Amazon Connect into four purpose-built agentic products (supply chain, hiring, customer, and healthcare admin), and Alibaba launched Accio Work, a no-code agent platform for sourcing, compliance, and logistics across 100+ markets. The signal: the big platforms are moving from "build your own agent" to "buy a vertical one." That compresses the window for generic automation and rewards operators who own a specific industry workflow.
Anthropic's private valuation passes OpenAI's
Source Crunchbase News
Anthropic's late-May Series H reportedly put its post-money valuation around $965B, edging past OpenAI's $852B March round. For builders, the takeaway is not the scoreboard — it's that capital is consolidating into a two-horse frontier race, so betting your stack on a single vendor carries more lock-in risk than it did a year ago.
Tool / launch watch
Zoom shipped ZoomMate on June 1 at $20 per user per month — an agent that sits inside live meetings and pushes decisions straight into Salesforce, Jira, ServiceNow, and Slack. For an agency or service firm, this is the rare launch that is deployable this week with no engineering: it turns meeting outcomes into CRM and ticket updates automatically. Worth a pilot on internal calls before pitching it into a client's stack.
Funding / M&A pulse
- Anthropic (~$965B) overtakes OpenAI (~$852B) on private valuation — the frontier is now a tight duopoly at the top.
- OpenAI's acqui-hire of personal-finance startup Hiro Finance is its seventh known acquisition of 2026 — the labs are buying vertical expertise, not just talent.
- Spend-management platform Ramp closed $750M at a $44B valuation — applied, workflow-embedded AI is where the late-stage money is going, not raw models.
